Biography

Songwriter, poet, storyteller… Will Cox had an adventurous, bruised-kneed childhood in the rolling Scottish Lowlands. His father a geologist, mother a botanist, Will grew up in a home filled with nature, music and a love of the great outdoors.

Moving to Oxford, England, at the age of 8, Will learnt piano and violin, embarking on his own musical quest. By his mid-teens he was playing guitar and starting to write songs.

It was at Banbury Art College Will joined his first band. He then trained as an actor at Mountview Drama College, London, and pursued a career on stage. During this time Will played his guitar, wrote prolifically, trained as a carpenter working on building sites and jamming with his mates, creating a body of work that stretches the length and breadth of his life’s journey.

His Debut Album ‘A Darkling Shore’ is testimony to this voyage; a neo-classical homage to a number of musical styles, from hard rock to blues, soul to punk, pastoral folk to classical romanticism.

Reaching into the deepest darkness and up to the highest peaks, Will Cox’s music is a wild and beautiful landscape of life, love, pain, and promise; a taste of the highlands, and lowlands, of the human heart.

ARTIST STATEMENT

No matter where the long road has run, the guitar has always accompanied me. It’s both my constant transmitter & diary, through all life’s funky towns, cluttered cities, wild islands & cold, cold seas.

My stylistic approach is fluid, since I love so many genres, but the process is always the same: What atmosphere, what feeling, does the music evoke?

Can a story worth the telling, be written to it? If so, the process of coalescence can, or must, begin.

Life can take you away from your ideals, by slow, undetectable degrees, until there comes a day when you realise you are not facing the right horizon anymore. If you don’t change course, if you ignore what you do best & just blindly keep going in the wrong direction, then you must accept a fate, a final destination, not worthy of your earlier dreams, your talent, or even your name.

A Darkling Shore is dedicated to the patience & generosity of my family & friends & to anyone who listens to my story.

Sorry it’s late… but better late than never.
